Rotary Concentrators

Rotary concentrators are advanced systems that combine adsorption and thermal or catalytic technology to manage volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in industrial exhaust streams. While a concentrator does not destroy VOCs directly, it concentrates them into a smaller, highly concentrated airstream for cost-effective destruction in a catalytic or thermal oxidizer, achieving up to 20:1 concentration ratios and 98.5% removal efficiency.

This technology is ideal for process exhaust streams with VOC concentrations that are:

  • Too high for cost-effective use of carbon adsorption systems
  • Too low for economical standalone thermal or catalytic oxidizers

By concentrating the VOC load, rotary concentrators dramatically reduce the size and operating costs of downstream oxidizers while achieving excellent emission control performance.

How Rotary Concentrators Work

VOC Adsorption

The main air flow passes through the rotating concentrator wheel, where VOCs are adsorbed onto the surface of the carbon or zeolite. This allows cleaned air to be safely discharged into the atmosphere.

VOC Desorption

A smaller flow of hot air is passed through a separate section of the rotating wheel in the opposite direction. This hot air desorbs the VOCs from the wheel’s surface, creating a highly concentrated airstream.

VOC Destruction

The concentrated VOC stream is sent to a catalytic or thermal oxidizer for efficient destruction.

Rotary Concentrator + Oxidizer Systems

EIS provides complete integrated solutions combining rotary concentrators with their optimal oxidation technologies.

The most popular combination. Concentrated VOCs are destroyed in a regenerative thermal oxidizer with 95-99% thermal efficiency. The RTO provides the hot air for concentrator desorption while operating autothermally.

For applications requiring lower operating temperatures or containing catalyst-compatible VOCs. Achieves destruction at 300-450°C (570-840°F) versus 750-850°C (1,380-1,560°F) for thermal oxidation.

Cost-effective solution for medium concentration applications with steady-state operation.

For very large air volumes, multiple concentrators can feed a single oxidizer for maximum efficiency.
